Avoid summer weekends if you can, because Galveston gets very busy then. This barrier island city on the Texas Gulf Coast, about 50 miles from Houston, has roughly 54,000 residents. It has a real historic core, with a Victorian East End and The Strand district, and it also has the tourist side, with the Seawall, Pleasure Pier and beaches. The pace is beachy and unhurried.
Most visitors spend time on the beach, at Moody Gardens with its aquarium pyramid and rainforest, and on The Strand for shops and dinner. Dickens on The Strand in December and Mardi Gras in February are the big events. Living costs are near the national average, but flood and wind insurance is expensive. Hurricane season can mean mandatory evacuation, and beaches bring rip currents, jellyfish, sargassum and occasional tar balls. Watch your belongings on crowded weekends.
