Stroll the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk and Union Avenue and you are in southern Colorado's steel town, a walkable city of about 110,000 on the Arkansas River, roughly 45 miles south of Colorado Springs and a good deal cheaper. It is proud of its chile, and the Pueblo Chile and Frijoles Festival in late September fills the streets. The Colorado State Fair also lands here each late summer. The Steelworks Museum tells the story of the mill that built the place.
Outside town, Lake Pueblo State Park handles boating and camping, and whitewater rafting on the Arkansas is not far. Pueblo is affordable, and that is a big part of its appeal. The honest side: property and violent crime run above the national average, and car theft is a local issue, so lock up. Summers are hot and dry with hail, and at about 4,700 feet you may notice the altitude.

5.0
Fair · Data-based
About 600 violent crimes per 100,000 people a year; the US average is about 370.
Safety overview
Violent crime and property crime are above the national average in city-level data (approximate; exact 2024 FBI figures not retrieved); vehicle theft is a notable local issue, so lock cars. Hospitals: Parkview Medical Center, St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center (Centura). Hazards: severe summer thunderstorms with hail, occasional tornadoes, flash flooding along Fountain Creek and the Arkansas River, wildfire smoke, hot dry summers (90s F) and occasional winter snowstorms; elevation about 4,700 feet can cause mild altitude effects for visitors from sea level
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Some areas of the Eastside, parts of the south side near Northern Avenue and Santa Fe Avenue, and some blocks near Elm Street in Bessemer have higher property and violent crime; use ordinary caution at night and avoid leaving valuables in cars. Downtown, the Riverwalk and daytime visitor areas are generally comfortable
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
