Overview

Ask most people entering the Yukon on the Alaska Highway where the first real stop is, and many will say Watson Lake. It is much smaller than Whitehorse, about 435 km away, with roughly 1,100 people. The Sign Post Forest, started by a homesick soldier during highway construction in 1942, now holds over 100,000 signs from around the world, and the Northern Lights Space and Science Centre is worth a stop for its planetarium and aurora shows.

Daily life here is quiet and tied to the road. Fishing, canoeing and walks around Wye Lake fill the summer, and the northern lights show from late August into spring. Liard River Hot Springs is about 150 km southeast across the border in British Columbia. Groceries cost more because of shipping, rentals are very scarce, and winter drops to -30 or -40 C. Drive carefully, since black ice, bison and long empty stretches are all part of the trip.

Hospitals: Watson Lake Community Hospital (Yukon Hospital Corporation, small, with emergency services), and Whitehorse General Hospital about 4.5 hours away for serious cases. Hazards: cold winters (-30 to -40 C), black ice and wildlife on the Alaska Highway, bears, forest fire smoke in summer, and long distances between services. Emergency 911

Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.

No areas to avoid; use ordinary caution late at night around bars and highway pull-offs; the Alaska Highway is dangerous in winter with black ice, wildlife (bison, moose, bears) and long stretches with no services; carry emergency supplies and fuel up early
