Without a bigger city for a long way in any direction, Fargo is a friendly college and medical hub of about 136,000 on the Red River, facing Moorhead, Minnesota, across the water. Most people know the name from the movie, but the real one and Moorhead together make a metro of roughly 270,000.
It feels compact and easy. Downtown has a lively strip along Broadway and Northern Pacific Avenue, with breweries and restaurants, and the Fargo Theatre and Plains Art Museum give it some culture. The Fargo Air Museum and the Viking ship replica in Moorhead are good rainy-day stops. Rents are moderate and homes are getting pricier, but still reasonable. Crime is mostly property crime, and no area needs avoiding outright. The real challenge is weather. Winter is truly hard, with wind chills that can fall below minus 30 and blizzards from November to March. Spring can bring Red River flooding.
