Potato and vegetable country sums up Portage la Prairie, a farming and service centre on the Assiniboine River, about 85 km west of Winnipeg. It has around 13,000 people. The French built Fort la Reine near here in 1738, and the town has been a crossroads ever since, right on the Trans-Canada Highway.
Island Park is the nicest corner, with Crescent Lake and walking paths in the middle of town. The Fort la Reine Museum and Pioneer Village covers local history, and Delta Marsh, about 30 km north, draws birdwatchers. The Canadian Forces run flight training at nearby Southport. Living costs are low and homes are affordable, with some spillover demand from Winnipeg. Crime is well above the national average, particularly property crime, and winters are long, cold and windy. Spring flooding on the river is a recurring worry.

Portage la Prairie City Circle
For people considering Portage la Prairie, visiting soon, living there for a while, or comparing it with somewhere else.
Population 13,270 (City of Portage la Prairie, 2021 Census, confirmed via a PortageOnline article and Wikipedia); area 24.72 sq km, elevation 261 m, dates and coordinates read from Wikipedia. WEAK POINT: population_metro 20,000 is an approximate figure for the Portage la Prairie Census Agglomeration (city plus surrounding RM and First Nations); I could not read the StatCan page (robots-blocked), and Wikipedia's 2,029.94 sq km agglomeration area was found without a clear population, so the true 2021 CA figure is unconfirmed and could differ by a few thousand. visitor_website is Travel Manitoba (provincial tourism, used because no dedicated Portage tourism site was confirmed); event_calendar is the City of Portage la Prairie homepage, unconfirmed as an events page. Event names and months, hotel ranges, cost of living, crime index, rent, home prices and distances are recalled or approximate and not verified. All money in CAD.

Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas widely flagged for visitors; use ordinary caution late at night downtown near Saskatchewan Avenue bars and around some motels where property crime and street disorder are periodically reported; winter driving on Highway 1 can be dangerous with blowing snow
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
