Set a few hours from both Regina and Saskatoon, Yorkton is an eastern Saskatchewan city of about 16,000 on flat farmland near the Manitoba border. It grew as a hub for Ukrainian and other eastern European settlers, and that heritage shows in the Western Development Museum and in the local festivals. The Yorkton Film Festival each May is the oldest short film festival in North America, which surprises visitors to a town this size.
Day to day it is a regional service centre, with a hospital, shops, a casino, the Godfrey Dean Cultural Centre and junior hockey in winter. For time outdoors, Good Spirit Lake Provincial Park is about 40 minutes away, and Duck Mountain Provincial Park is a longer drive into hillier, forested country. Living here is cheap and housing is straightforward. The tradeoffs are cold winters with blizzards, dangerous highways at times, and crime that runs above the national average, mostly property crime and theft.
