Overview

Wetter than anywhere else in the country, Hilo is the county seat of the Big Island of Hawaii, and the rain explains the lush green and the waterfalls tucked around town. It is the quieter, older side of the island compared with Kona, with a downtown of low wooden storefronts, a big farmers market, and orchids everywhere. Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls are close, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is about 30 miles away, and the Merrie Monarch hula festival fills the town each spring.

About 44,000 people live here, and it feels local rather than resort-like. Costs are above the mainland average, and homes are pricey with limited supply. Expect frequent rain, some volcanic haze on bad days, and real hazards: tsunami zones along the bay, hurricane season, and strong surf and currents. Car break-ins happen at trailheads and beach parks, so leave nothing visible.

                  Safety overview

Violent crime about 376 per 100,000 (NeighborhoodScout, 2024, Hilo; property crime about 2,700 per 100,000, with high vehicle theft); Hilo Medical Center (Hawaii Health Systems) and Hawaii Volcano area clinics; hazards: vog and ash from Kilauea eruptions (air quality alerts, sensitive groups), lava activity in the national park, tsunami (bayfront is inundation zone, 1946 and 1960 tsunamis, sirens tested monthly), hurricanes June-November, flash flooding and heavy rain year-round, dangerous surf and rip currents, earthquakes; dengue and leptospirosis rare, drink treated water and avoid freshwater pools with open cuts

                  Local notes

Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.

No no-go zones for visitors. Petty theft and car break-ins occur, especially at trailheads, waterfalls and beach parks, so lock valuables out of sight. Use caution around some parts of downtown after dark and near Banyan Drive late at night. Avoid swimming at unprotected shores and river mouths during high surf or heavy rain (flash floods, strong currents).
