Long Beach is the name that pulls surfers to Tofino, a small surf town at the end of the road on the west coast of Vancouver Island, at the edge of Clayoquot Sound. Only about 2,500 people live here, but the summer crowds are many times that. Chesterman Beach and Cox Bay draw surfers year round too, and you can go whale watching, kayak the sound, or take a boat to Hot Springs Cove.
It is a beautiful place, and an expensive one. Housing is the real cost, with home prices among the highest in the province and rentals scarce, so many workers live in shared houses or commute from Ucluelet. Highway 4 gets jammed in July and August and can close in bad weather. Crime is low, mostly car break-ins at beach lots. The hospital is small, so serious cases go to Port Alberni or Nanaimo. Rip currents, cold water and tsunami zones are worth learning about.

Tofino City Circle
For people considering Tofino, visiting soon, living there for a while, or comparing it with somewhere else.
Population 2,516 (Tofino district municipality, 2021 Census, Statistics Canada, via Wikipedia); population_metro 33,521 is the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (2021 Census, via Wikipedia) because Tofino is not in a CMA or census agglomeration; the regional district includes Port Alberni, Ucluelet and rural areas, so it greatly overstates the local metro area. Area 10.53 sq km, elevation 10 m, coordinates and the 1932, 1982 and 2008 municipal status dates from Wikipedia. Real estate is from Zolo asking prices (September 2026, small sample) and a Westerly News article on the VIREB island-wide benchmark; Tofino specific sold-price data was not found. Cost of living, hotel and rent ranges, park fees, tipping, hospital details, airport service, event months and levies are approximate or general knowledge and not verified in this pass. Confidence medium-low. Official URLs (tourismtofino.com and tourismtofino.com/events-festivals/) were seen in search results but not load-tested.

8.0
Very good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 60; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Crime is low, mostly petty theft and vehicle break-ins at beach parking lots (RCMP-policed; approximate). Health care: BC Medical Services Plan does not cover visitors, so travel insurance is advisable; Tofino General Hospital is small with limited emergency care, and serious cases go to Port Alberni or Nanaimo by ambulance (about 2 to 3 hours) or by air ambulance; Highway 4 (Sutton Pass) can be closed by crashes or weather. Hazards: Tofino is in a tsunami hazard zone (know the evacuation routes and signs; earthquake shaking is the signal to move to high ground), winter storm season (November to March, high winds, power outages and flooding), rip currents and cold water (wetsuit needed), rogue waves, bears and cougars, wildfire smoke and drought water restrictions in late summer. Emergency: 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Nothing of particular note for crime. Practical cautions: avoid swimming or surfing in rip currents and big surf without lessons or a lifeguard, avoid rocky headlands and beaches during storm swells and high tide (sneaker waves), avoid trails closed for bear or cougar activity, and expect heavy traffic and full parking on Highway 4 and Long Beach in July and August; do not leave valuables in cars at trailheads and beaches
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
