The Stanley Park Seawall is a good place to see why people fall for Vancouver, a coastal city of about 660,000 with mountains on one side and the Pacific on the other. The region has around 2.6 million people, and the views are hard to beat. Days here can mean cycling the seawall, browsing Granville Island Market, crossing the Capilano Suspension Bridge, walking on Kitsilano beach or skiing at Cypress or Grouse Mountain. Whistler is about 120 kilometres north. Neighborhoods like Gastown, Commercial Drive and Mount Pleasant each have their own personality.
The tradeoffs are cost and weather. Housing is among the most expensive in Canada, and winters are long, wet and gray. Property crime and car break-ins are common, so never leave valuables in a parked car. The Downtown Eastside has serious poverty and open drug use. The city also sits in an earthquake zone. Visitors need their own health insurance.

6.0
Good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 100; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Vancouver's Crime Severity Index is above the national average for property crime (roughly 90-110, approximate, Statistics Canada; police data show property crime, car break-ins and bike theft as the main issues, violent crime concentrated in the Downtown Eastside). Never leave valuables visible in a car. Health care: BC MSP does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Vancouver General and St. Paul's, BC Children's and Women's, Mount Saint Joseph. Hazards: wet gray winters (Oct to Mar), rare snow and ice, summer wildfire smoke episodes, atmospheric-river flooding in fall, major earthquake zone (Cascadia). Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
The Downtown Eastside around East Hastings Street between Main and Carrall, including parts of Chinatown and Gastown's east edge, has concentrated poverty, open drug use and street disorder; visitors are generally advised to walk through only by day and with awareness, and to avoid lingering late at night. Other visitor areas are generally fine, though car break-ins occur at trailheads and parking lots
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
