Bring both skis and a swimsuit to Vernon, at the north end of the Okanagan Valley, a city of about 45,000 with nearly 70,000 in the wider area. It is less polished than Kelowna and more down to earth, with a mural-covered downtown, orchards, and three lakes within easy reach. Kalamalka Lake, with its turquoise water, is the star, and Silver Star Mountain gives the town a real ski season and a summer bike park.
Days here revolve around the outdoors. You can swim at Kal Beach, hike the provincial park trails, visit the O'Keefe Ranch heritage site, or drive to nearby wineries and cideries. The Saturday farmers market runs through the warm months, and the Winter Carnival is in February. The price of that scenery is real. Housing is expensive for Canada, especially houses, and the crime rate is above the national average, with street disorder downtown and car break-ins at trailheads. Summers can bring wildfire smoke and intense heat.
