Orchards and vineyards fill the dry, sunny desert country around Osoyoos, at the southern end of the Okanagan, right by the US border. It is Canada's warmest town, sitting on the country's warmest lake, and about 5,600 people live here, with a lake you can actually swim in comfortably.
Summers are for beaches, boating, cherry picking and winery hopping along the Golden Mile and Black Sage Bench. The Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre, run by the Osoyoos Indian Band, is worth a visit for the desert ecology and Syilx culture. Retirees and second-home buyers have pushed housing prices up, so it is expensive for a small town and rentals are tight in summer. Crime is around the BC average. The tradeoffs are extreme summer heat, wildfire smoke, rattlesnakes on dry trails and drownings on the lake. Oliver, about 20 km away, has the nearest hospital.

Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas to avoid; use ordinary caution late at night around some downtown bars and motels; avoid rattlesnakes in dry hillside trails, take care of extreme summer heat, boat traffic and drowning on the lake, and do not take unpermitted photos or walk on Osoyoos Indian Band private lands
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
