The Roots and Blues Festival fills the fairgrounds in mid-August in Salmon Arm, the lakeside hub of the Shuswap, in the interior of British Columbia, with about 19,000 residents. The town spreads along a shallow bay on Shuswap Lake, and its long wharf and boardwalk are where most people end up on a summer evening.
Visitors rent houseboats, paddle or fish on the lake, and watch the Western grebes do their courtship dance in the bay reserve. Winters bring cross-country skiing at Larch Hills. Day to day it is a friendly, outdoorsy place with a farmers market, a small downtown and easy access to Kamloops, Vernon and Kelowna. It costs less than the Okanagan, but homes are still pricey for the size of town. Crime rates run above the national average, mostly property crime and some street disorder downtown. Summer wildfire smoke and cold lake water are the other things to plan around.

Safety overview
Statistics Canada and RCMP data show a Crime Severity Index above the national average for Salmon Arm (roughly 90-130, approximate), mostly property crime and mischief; violent crime against visitors is uncommon. Health care: BC MSP does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospital: Shuswap Lake General Hospital (Interior Health) with emergency room. Hazards: cold-water immersion and boating accidents on Shuswap Lake, summer wildfires and smoke (notably 2023), winter driving on Highway 1 and the Rogers Pass corridor, and black and grizzly bears. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas flagged as no-go for visitors; use ordinary caution late at night around some parts of the Highway 1 corridor and downtown where street disorder and drug use occur; avoid swimming or boating in Shuswap Lake during storms and cold-water periods, and be careful with wildfires and rural gravel roads in summer
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
