The Three Sisters peaks rise right above Canmore, a mountain town of about 16,000 in the Bow Valley, sitting at roughly 1,400 meters. It began as a coal mining and railway town and hosted the Nordic events at the 1988 Olympics. Banff National Park is about 20 kilometers up the road, and Calgary is about an hour and a half east.
The outdoors is the whole point. The Nordic Centre has trails for skiing and mountain biking, Grassi Lakes is a favorite hike, and Kananaskis Country is close by. It is a very expensive place to live, with housing costs far above the Canadian average because of tourism demand and limited land, and many workers commute in from Calgary or Cochrane. Crime is low, but wildlife is a daily fact of life, with elk, bears and cougars near trails.

Population 15,990 (Town of Canmore, 2021 Census, Statistics Canada, via Wikipedia). population_metro 22,297 is set exactly as instructed: it is the combined Banff plus Canmore figure used on the Banff row (Banff 8,305 plus Canmore 13,992), not a CMA or census agglomeration; note that 13,992 is the older 2016 Census figure for Canmore, and the 2021 Census figure is 15,990, so the combined 2021 figure would be about 24,295. Area 68.47 sq km total (urban area about 13 sq km), 1884 founding, 1965 and 1966 status dates, coordinates and 1988 Olympics from Wikipedia; elevation 1,400 m is a town average (Wikipedia gives 1,375 to 1,480 m). 8.0
Very good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 60; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Crime is low and mostly petty theft and vehicle break-ins at trailheads (RCMP-policed; approximate). Health care: Alberta Health Care does not cover visitors, so travel insurance is advisable; Canmore General Hospital has emergency care but limited capacity, with major trauma transferred to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary (about 1.25 hours by road or air ambulance); backcountry rescue costs can be high. Hazards: bears, cougars, elk and other wildlife, avalanche danger in winter backcountry, wildfire and smoke in summer, flooding and debris flow on Cougar Creek and Cascade Creek (the 2013 floods), rapid mountain weather changes, extreme cold, winter driving on Highway 1 and 1A (winter tires advised). Emergency: 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Nothing of particular note for crime. Practical cautions: keep at least 30 m from elk and 100 m from bears and cougars, avoid trails closed for wildlife activity (Bow Valley corridors), avoid Cougar Creek and Cascade area during heavy rain (flood and debris flow risk), avoid crowded trailhead lots at Grassi Lakes on summer weekends, and stay off frozen lakes and rivers unless advised
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
