About 120 km south of Quesnel and 250 km north of Kamloops, Williams Lake is the main service town of the Cariboo Chilcotin. Its nickname is the Stampede City, and the Stampede over the Canada Day weekend is easily its biggest week, with a parade, a rodeo and a lot of cowboy hats. About 11,000 people live in town.
Life here is practical and outdoorsy. Scout Island's marsh trails and the river valley trail are the everyday walks, and the Museum of the Cariboo Chilcotin covers local history. Barkerville is roughly 140 km away, and Highway 20 heads west toward Bella Coola for the adventurous. Housing is far cheaper than at the coast. Set that against a crime rate well above the national average, winters that reach -30 C, and wildfire seasons in 2017 and 2021 that forced evacuations across the region.

3.2
Poor · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 165; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Williams Lake RCMP data show a Crime Severity Index well above the national average (roughly 140-190, approximate) driven by property crime, drug offences and street disorder; main visitor risks are vehicle theft and break-ins. Health care: BC MSP does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Cariboo Memorial Hospital (Interior Health, emergency room, regional acute care); Kamloops's Royal Inland Hospital is the larger referral centre. Hazards: major wildfire seasons (2017 and 2021 caused evacuations in the Cariboo), winter cold (-15 to -30 C), smoke, flooding (spring), black bears and grizzlies. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas flagged for visitors; use ordinary caution late at night downtown near Oliver Street and Mackenzie Avenue where street disorder and drug use are sometimes reported; Highway 97 and Highway 20 can be icy or snowbound, and wildlife crosses roads at dawn and dusk
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
