Close enough to Toronto for commuters to take the train, Cobourg is a Lake Ontario town about 110 km east of the city, and it likes to call itself Ontario's Feel Good Town. About 20,000 people live here, a mix of longtime locals, retirees and commuters.
The centre is a well kept heritage downtown along King Street, with Victoria Hall, the 1860 town hall and courthouse, as its landmark. The Blue Flag beach and boardwalk are the heart of summer, with the harbour and marina alongside. People come for the Waterfront Festival, sandcastle events and the Saturday farmers market, and to explore the Northumberland Hills for wine, cider and forest trails. Crime is around or a bit below the national average. Housing has become expensive, driven by retiree and commuter demand, and rentals cost more than you might expect for a small town. Winters bring lake snow and freezing rain.

About this data
Population 20,519 (2021 Census) and land area 22.41 sq km are from Wikipedia (fetched); founding dates (1798, 1837) also from Wikipedia, while Victoria Hall 1860 is recalled and unverified. Elevation about 80 m and coordinates are approximate. visitor_website and event_calendar are cobourg.ca pages recalled from the town's site pattern (the town's tourism branding also uses Cobourg Tourism pages) and were not confirmed by page fetch; treat as unconfirmed. Event names and months, hotel ranges, cost of living, crime index, rent, prices, distances and airport drive times are approximate or from general knowledge and not verified. All money in CAD.

Crime Severity Index around 63; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Cobourg Police Service data and Statistics Canada put the Crime Severity Index around or a little below the national average (roughly 50-75, approximate); main risks are property theft, break-ins and impaired driving. Health care: Ontario OHIP does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospital: Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg, with emergency department. Hazards: cold winters (-5 to -15 C), lake-effect snow and freezing rain, summer thunderstorms, lake swimming hazards and algae advisories at the beach. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas widely flagged for visitors; use ordinary caution late at night around some parts of downtown and older apartment blocks near King Street East where drug use and street disorder are occasionally reported; waterfront and harbour piers can be windy and slippery in storms
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
