Around 125,000 people call Ajax home, with large South Asian, Filipino, Caribbean and Chinese communities. It is a lakeside town on the eastern edge of the Greater Toronto Area, about 45 km from downtown. It was planned in the 1940s around a wartime munitions plant and named after HMS Ajax, so it feels more like a designed suburb than an old town.
Life is suburban and practical. The waterfront trail runs along Lake Ontario, Carruthers Marsh and Duffins Creek offer easy walks, and Ajax Downs has a racetrack and casino. Many residents commute by GO train or the 401 to Toronto. Housing is expensive but less so than in Toronto, and the cost of living sits above the national average. Crime is below average, with car theft the main regional concern. Winters are cold with freezing rain, and the lakefront trails are dark after sunset.

Safety overview
Durham Regional Police data and Statistics Canada put Ajax's Crime Severity Index below the national average (roughly 45-65, approximate); main visitor risks are vehicle theft (a regional problem in the GTA), break-ins and 401 traffic collisions. Health care: Ontario OHIP does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Lakeridge Health Ajax Pickering Hospital in Ajax, with emergency department. Hazards: cold snowy winters (-5 to -15 C), freezing rain, summer heat and humidity, lakeside storms. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas widely flagged for visitors; use ordinary urban caution late at night around some apartment corridors and plazas along Harwood and Bayly and near the 401 interchanges where property crime is concentrated; lakefront trails are dark after sunset
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
