The Pickering nuclear power station stands on the lakeshore of this suburb on the eastern edge of Toronto, about 40 km from downtown, alongside a lot of new development. About 100,000 people live here. Many residents commute along the 401 or by GO train, and the city ranges from older Bay Ridges near the water to established neighbourhoods like Amberlea, and Seaton, a big new growth area in the north.
Nature is a bonus. Frenchman's Bay has a marina and beach, Petticoat Creek Conservation Area has trails, and Rouge National Urban Park runs along the western edge. The Toronto Zoo is a short drive. Housing costs are high, well above the national average and in line with other Toronto suburbs. Crime is below average, but vehicle theft and porch theft are the main worries. Winters are cold and icy, and the 401 backs up at rush hour.

8.4
Very good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 53; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Durham Regional Police data and Statistics Canada suggest a Crime Severity Index below the national average (roughly 45-60, approximate); main visitor risks are car theft, vehicle break-ins and porch theft. Health care: OHIP does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Ajax Pickering Hospital (Lakeridge Health), about 10 minutes from most areas. Hazards: cold snowy winters (-5 to -20 C), freezing rain, summer heat, Lake Ontario shoreline erosion and storms. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas widely flagged for visitors; use ordinary urban caution late at night around parts of Bay Ridges, Kingston Road strip motels and some transit areas; winter roads and the Highway 401 corridor can be congested or icy
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
