Take a seat at the Stratford Festival, and you are in a small Ontario city of about 33,000 that has turned Shakespeare into an economy. The festival, running from spring to late fall since 1953, brings in theatre lovers from across North America, and the swans on the Avon River are just as famous. Downtown is full of handsome brick buildings, good restaurants, and small shops.
A visit usually means a play, then dinner. Stratford also has a chocolate trail, a Saturday farmers market, a garlic festival, so eating well is part of the point. Queen's Park by the river is where people wander between shows. Toronto is about 150 km away, and Kitchener-Waterloo is closer. Living here costs a bit above the national average, with housing that shot up before easing after 2022. It is a low-crime city, with only some late-night disorder downtown. The tradeoffs are cold, snowy winters and a town that gets busy in summer and quiet in January.

About this data
Population 33,232 is the 2021 Census figure for the City of Stratford; the Stratford census agglomeration equals the city itself (33,232, recalled and not verified, may differ slightly), so metro equals the city figure. Land area about 29.7 sq km per 2021 Census. visitstratford.ca is Destination Stratford, the official tourism bureau, and its calendar page was seen in search results but not load-tested. Web fetch of Statistics Canada pages was blocked (robots.txt), so figures are recalled from the 2021 Census and lower confidence; search found the Focus on Geography pages but they were not opened. Elevation, coordinates, founding, event months, hotel ranges, tipping, cost-of-living comparisons, crime index, rent, home prices and distances are approximate or from general knowledge and not verified. Safety overview
Stratford Police Service data show a Crime Severity Index around or below the national average (roughly 55-80, approximate, Statistics Canada); main visitor risks are theft from vehicles, bike theft and occasional late-night incidents downtown. Health care: Ontario OHIP does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Stratford General Hospital (Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance) with an emergency department; St. Marys Memorial and London hospitals for advanced care. Hazards: cold snowy winters with lake-effect snow squalls off Lake Huron, freezing rain, summer thunderstorms, and occasional Avon River flooding. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Stratford is a low-crime small city; some petty crime, drug use and occasional public disorder are noted around parts of downtown and the Market Square area late at night. No area is a no-go for visitors
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
