Just north of Detroit, Warren is a big, practical city of about 137,000, and it is the largest city in Macomb County. The GM Technical Center is here, and the auto industry shapes much of the local economy. Neighborhoods run from dense and mixed near Eight Mile Road to quieter, family-oriented streets in the northeast.
Visitors will find things to do around the edges. There are summer concerts, car cruise nights, parks with trails, and diners along Van Dyke, with Polish and Middle Eastern food that reflects the mix of communities. The Detroit Zoo and downtown Detroit are about 15 miles south, and the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Motown Museum are within 30 minutes. It is affordable for the Detroit area, though homes sell fast. Crime is higher than the state average, especially in the south near the Detroit border, so use care there at night.
