Circling the Square is the first thing to do in Goderich. The downtown is laid out as an octagon around the courthouse, with shops and cafes on the spokes, and it is a big part of why the town has been called the prettiest in Canada. From there it is a short walk to the harbour, the lighthouse and the beach on Lake Huron, where sunsets draw a crowd.
Goderich has fewer than 8,000 residents, sits on the Maitland River, was founded in 1827 and is the seat of Huron County. A big salt mine runs under the lake beside it. Prices are moderate for Ontario but rose as retirees and remote workers arrived, and rentals are limited. Winters bring lake-effect snow that can close nearby highways, and the bluffs along the shore are unstable in storms. London is about 110 km away.
