Early fall is a good time to see Toronto, Canada's biggest city, with about 2.8 million people in the city and over six million in the region. It is the country's financial center and probably the most multicultural place you will visit, with well over 100 languages spoken and neighborhoods that feel like different worlds.
Visitors see the CN Tower, the Royal Ontario Museum, St. Lawrence Market and Kensington Market, take the ferry to the Toronto Islands, catch a Blue Jays game, or drive out to Niagara Falls. September brings the film festival, and summer has Pride and Caribana. Queen West, Leslieville and the Beaches each have their own feel. The tradeoffs are cost, which is high for Canada, especially housing, plus cold snowy winters and humid summers. Crime is moderate for a city this size, though pickpocketing and some street disorder downtown east are worth knowing about. Visitors need their own health insurance.

7.8
Very good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 65; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Toronto's Crime Severity Index is below the national average for a city its size (roughly 60-70 versus about 80 for Canada, approximate, Statistics Canada); main visitor risks are pickpocketing, bike and car theft, and occasional random assaults on transit. Health care: Ontario OHIP does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is strongly advisable. Hospitals: Toronto General and Toronto Western (UHN), Sunnybrook, St. Michael's, SickKids (children). Hazards: cold snowy winters (-5 to -15 C, ice), humid summers with heat waves and thunderstorms, occasional wildfire smoke and flash flooding. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Use extra caution late at night in parts of Downtown East around Moss Park and Dundas and Sherbourne, and near some transit stations and encampment areas where street disorder and drug use are visible; some outer northwest and northeast neighbourhoods have higher violent crime rates but rarely draw visitors. Most visitor areas are generally fine day and night
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
