Weekends send many Ontarians north through Barrie, a lakeside city on Kempenfelt Bay an hour and a half from Toronto, where the drive into cottage country begins. Around 150,000 people live here. The waterfront is the heart of it, with Centennial Beach, a long trail along the bay, and a downtown of restaurants and shops a short walk uphill.
Summers revolve around the water and Kempenfest, the big August craft show. Winters are serious. Snow squalls can close Highways 400 and 11, but locals skate, ice fish and ski at Snow Valley anyway. Housing is expensive but noticeably easier than in Toronto, which is why so many commuters and young families have settled here. Growth has brought traffic and some street disorder near the downtown bus terminal, though overall crime is close to average for a city this size. English dominates far more than it does around Toronto.

7.0
Very good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 80; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Barrie is served by Barrie Police Service; the Crime Severity Index is close to or slightly above the national average for a city its size (roughly 70-90, approximate, Statistics Canada and Barrie Police data); main issues are property crime, vehicle theft and downtown street disorder. Hospitals: Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (Barrie, main hospital), Georgian Bay General and Orillia Soldiers Memorial nearby. Health care: Ontario OHIP does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hazards: heavy lake-effect snow squalls from Georgian Bay (snowbelt) and Lake Simcoe, cold winters (-10 to -20 C with windchill), summer thunderstorms and occasional flooding. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Barrie has no areas widely considered dangerous to visitors; some downtown blocks near Dunlop Street East and the bus terminal, and around Bradford and Essa Roads, have higher rates of street disorder and property crime late at night. Ice on Kempenfelt Bay in winter is unsafe unless marked and cleared by local authorities; heavy snow squalls can close Highway 400 and 11
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
