Niagara-on-the-Lake stays small and very pretty at the mouth of the Niagara River, where Lake Ontario meets the wine country. About 19,000 people live here. It was once the first capital of Upper Canada, and the heritage buildings along Queen Street in Old Town give it a tidy, well-kept look that few Ontario towns match.
Most visitors come for the Shaw Festival theatre, which runs from spring into December, and for the wineries. Icewine is the local specialty. You can also tour Fort George, cycle the river parkway, pick peaches and cherries in season, or drive over to Niagara Falls for a day, about 20 kilometers away. Living here is expensive, among the priciest markets in the region, and rentals are hard to find. Summer weekends bring traffic and parking headaches in Old Town. On the plus side, crime is very low, and Toronto and Buffalo are both within easy reach.

Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Niagara-on-the-Lake is a very low-crime destination; issues are mainly traffic and parking congestion in Old Town on summer weekends and rowdy behaviour at some late-night spots. Do not walk on the Niagara Parkway shoulder in the dark; use marked bike paths and beware fast cars on rural wine roads, and do not drink and drive on wine tours
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
