Roughly 260,000 people live in Kitchener, the larger half of the Kitchener-Waterloo pair, in a region of well over half a million. It started as a German and Mennonite settlement and was named Berlin until 1916, and that heritage still shows up each October at Canada's biggest Oktoberfest. Today it also has a real tech and startup scene, and downtown has filled in with cafes, galleries and new condos.
The Kitchener Farmers' Market is a good Saturday morning, and Victoria Park is pretty for a stroll. St. Jacobs, with its market and Mennonite country, is about 15 km north, and Elora Gorge is a short drive for swimming and tubing. It costs a little above the national average, well below Toronto, though prices climbed a lot before cooling. Winters are snowy. Crime is about average, with some street disorder visible around downtown and the transit hubs, and car and bike theft are the usual issues.

Very good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 68; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Waterloo Region's Crime Severity Index is around or slightly below the national average (roughly 60-75, approximate, Statistics Canada and Waterloo Regional Police data); main visitor risks are vehicle theft and break-ins, bike theft and property crime. Health care: provincial health insurance does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Grand River Hospital (Kitchener-Waterloo campuses), St. Mary's General Hospital, Cambridge Memorial. Hazards: cold snowy winters (-5 to -15 C, ice), humid summers with thunderstorms and occasional tornado or severe weather warnings, flooding along the Grand River in spring. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Use extra caution late at night in parts of downtown Kitchener around King Street and Victoria near transit hubs and some social service sites, where street disorder and drug use are visible, and in some Victoria Hills and Chandler-Mowat pockets with higher property crime; most visitor areas are generally fine
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
