Among Niagara's cities, St. Catharines is the largest, known as the Garden City for its parks and flowers. About 135,000 people live here, between Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment, roughly 20 km from Niagara Falls. Brock University gives it a student population.
Visitors come for the wine country just west, the Port Dalhousie waterfront with its old carousel and beach, and the Welland Canal, where ships rise and fall through the locks. August brings the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta and September the Niagara Wine Festival. Costs run a touch above the national average but below most of southern Ontario. Downtown has an arts scene but also visible street disorder near Saint Paul and Geneva streets, and Port Dalhousie can get rowdy on summer weekend nights. Crime overall is around average. Lake-effect snow makes winters messy, and summers are humid.

Safety overview
St. Catharines-Niagara's Crime Severity Index is around or slightly below the national average (roughly 65-80, approximate, Statistics Canada and Niagara Regional Police data); main visitor risks are theft from vehicles, bike theft and property crime; violent crime is concentrated in a few downtown neighbourhoods. Hospitals: St. Catharines site of Niagara Health (Emergency Department) and Hotel-Dieu Shaver Health and Rehabilitation Centre; Niagara Falls and Welland sites nearby. Hazards: lake-effect snow and cold winters (-5 to -10 C), humid summers with thunderstorms and heat waves, occasional flooding on Twelve Mile Creek. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Most visitor areas are fine; use extra caution late at night in parts of the downtown core near Saint Paul Street and Geneva Street, the Facer and Queenston corridors and some pockets in Merritton, where street disorder, drug use and property crime are more visible. Port Dalhousie can be busy and rowdy on summer weekend nights
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
