Split by the Niagara Escarpment, Hamilton is a steel city of about 570,000 on the western tip of Lake Ontario, cheaper than Toronto, about 70 kilometres away, and it has been quietly reinventing itself. The escarpment gives the city more than 100 waterfalls and trails along the Bruce Trail. Visitors head to the Royal Botanical Gardens, Dundurn Castle, the waterfalls, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and the shops and galleries on James Street North and Locke Street. Supercrawl in September is the big street festival, and Tiger-Cats games fill the fall. Dundas and Ancaster are small towns inside the city with their own character.
That price gap is why many people are relocating here, though prices have climbed. Parts of the lower city, especially around King Street East and Barton Street East, have visible drug use and higher crime. Winters are snowy, and steel plants affect air quality near the harbour.

7.0
Very good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 80; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Hamilton's Crime Severity Index is around the national average, higher than nearby Halton Region (roughly 70-90 versus about 80 for Canada, approximate; Hamilton Police Service and Statistics Canada); main visitor risks are car theft and break-ins, bike theft and occasional assaults downtown at night. Health care: Ontario OHIP does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Hamilton General, Juravinski Hospital and McMaster University Medical Centre (Hamilton Health Sciences), St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, McMaster Children's Hospital. Hazards: snowy winters with lake-effect squalls (-5 to -15 C, ice); humid summers with heat waves; escarpment trail hazards (unstable rock and steep drops at waterfalls); flash flooding after heavy rain; industrial air quality concerns near the harbour and steel plants. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas are formally off limits. Use caution late at night in parts of the lower city (central east side of downtown around King Street East, Barton Street East and the Sherman Avenue corridor) where drug use, street disorder and higher property and violent crime are reported; some Hamilton Mountain and east end plazas have similar patterns. Downtown core near Gore Park, James Street North and the waterfront are generally fine by day
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
