Hikers come to Milton for the Niagara Escarpment, and the town itself is one of Canada's fastest-growing, a commuter suburb about 55 km west of downtown Toronto at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment. About 130,000 people live here, a number that has climbed sharply in two decades, and much of the town is new subdivisions around a small historic Main Street.
Kelso Conservation Area has a lake, hiking, mountain biking and a small ski hill, Rattlesnake Point and Crawford Lake are close by, and the Bruce Trail passes through. There is also a cycling velodrome left over from the Pan Am Games. Housing is expensive, well above the national average, and most residents drive or commute by highway. Milton is very safe, with crime well below average, and it has a large South Asian community. Traffic on the 401 and 407 is the main headache, and escarpment roads can ice over in winter.

9.3
Excellent · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 28; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Halton Regional Police data and Statistics Canada show a Crime Severity Index well below the national average (roughly 20-35, approximate); Halton is one of Canada's safest regions; main visitor risks are vehicle theft and break-ins, and traffic collisions on 401. Health care: Ontario OHIP does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Milton District Hospital (Halton Healthcare, emergency room; expanded in the 2020s), Oakville Trafalgar Memorial and Joseph Brant (Burlington) as larger regional hospitals. Hazards: cold snowy winters (-5 to -20 C), freezing rain, summer heat and thunderstorms, escarpment cliff falls, ticks in trails. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas widely flagged for visitors; use ordinary caution with car and package theft in residential areas, and highway traffic on Highway 401 and Highway 407 corridors at rush hour; winter driving on escarpment roads can be icy, and stay on marked trails at Kelso and Rattlesnake Point cliffs
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
