Winters in Ottawa are properly cold, with snow and freezing rain, yet Canada's capital feels more like a well-kept mid-sized city than a political hub. About one million people live in the city, with Parliament Hill, national museums and the Rideau Canal all close to downtown. Gatineau, Quebec, is just across the river.
The canal is the heart of it. In winter it becomes a long skating rink and in summer you can walk, bike or paddle. ByWard Market is the place for food, and the National Gallery and War Museum are worth a visit. Tulip Festival in May and Bluesfest in July are the big events. Nearby Gatineau Park is great for hiking. Costs are near the national average and incomes are steady thanks to government jobs. It is officially bilingual, and safety is fine with ordinary big city caution after dark near the market and Rideau Street.

Safety overview
Ottawa has a Crime Severity Index below the Canadian average (Statistics Canada, Ottawa CMA); main visitor risks are theft from vehicles, bicycle theft and occasional downtown disorder. Health care: Ontario OHIP does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: The Ottawa Hospital (Civic and General campuses), Queensway Carleton, Montfort, CHEO (children). Hazards: cold winters (to -25C or lower with wind chill), snow and freezing rain, icy canal ice, summer heat and humidity, spring flood risk on the Ottawa River, wildfire smoke episodes. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Use ordinary big-city caution late at night in parts of the ByWard Market and Rideau Street after bar closing, around the Rideau and Dalhousie area with visible street disorder, and some blocks of Vanier and Lowertown; most visitor areas including Parliament Hill, the Glebe and Westboro are generally comfortable
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
