Warm summers bring Saratoga Springs, upstate New York's spa and horse racing town about 30 miles north of Albany, to life. Natural mineral springs put it on the map in the 1800s, and the thoroughbred meet at Saratoga Race Course, along with concerts at SPAC, keeps it busy and a little glamorous. Broadway is lined with shops and restaurants, and Congress Park and Saratoga Spa State Park give locals green space to wander. Visitors also tour the National Museum of Racing, the Saratoga battlefield and Yaddo Gardens. Lake George is a short drive north.
The catch is cost. Housing is expensive and the market is tight, so this is not a bargain, and parking and traffic are hard during track season. Winters bring real snow and ice, and ticks are common in wooded areas. Crime is low, though pickpocketing and car break-ins tend to rise in crowded weeks, and race weekends bring drunk driving.
