Overview

Walking to good restaurants and independent shops around Market Square is part of everyday life in Portsmouth, a compact seaport on New Hampshire's short coastline, settled in 1630 and still full of brick warehouses and Colonial-era homes. About 23,000 people live here, and downtown feels like a small town. Kittery, Maine is just across the bridge.

Visitors tour Strawbery Banke Museum, relax in Prescott Park (which hosts a summer arts festival), take harbor cruises to the Isles of Shoals, and head to nearby beaches. Boston is about an hour south. The price of that charm is high. Home prices have been climbing strongly and are well above the national norm, and downtown parking is tight, so a garage is wise. Summer weekends bring crowds and traffic on the Memorial Bridge. Crime is low. Nor'easters and coastal flooding can hit, and the ocean water is cold for swimming.

About 187 violent crimes per 100,000 people a year; the US average is about 370.

                  Safety overview

Violent crime about 187 per 100k (2024 aggregator), roughly half the US average; property crime about 1,284 per 100k, below average, though an aggregator reports a year-over-year uptick. Visitor risks: theft from cars, cold-water swimming hazards, tick-borne illness in wooded areas. Hazards: nor'easters and winter storms, coastal flooding during high tides and storms, summer heat spells. Hospital: Portsmouth Regional Hospital (HCA); Exeter Hospital and Wentworth-Douglass Hospital (Dover) nearby

                  Local notes

Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.

None of note. Downtown parking is tight, a paid parking garage or lot is advisable. Summer weekend crowds and traffic on the Memorial Bridge and Route 1 can be heavy; bar closing time downtown may bring some late-night rowdiness
