Cheaper than Boston and just south of it, Brockton is a working city of about 106,000, once a shoe manufacturing center and still called the City of Champions for boxers Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler. It is dense and diverse, with a large Cape Verdean community whose restaurants around Main Street are a real reason to visit. You will hear Cape Verdean Creole, Portuguese, Haitian Creole and Spanish.
Visitors can see the Fuller Craft Museum, walk D.W. Field Park, catch a Brockton Rox game, or go to the Brockton Fair. Boston is about 25 miles away, and commuter rail and Route 24 make it a practical base for people who want lower prices than the city. It is more affordable than Boston, though still above the national average. Violent crime is above the state average, and parts of downtown and Campello call for ordinary big-city caution at night. Winters bring nor'easters, snow and ice.
