Once a railroad town, Ogden has reinvented itself as an outdoors base, set against the Wasatch Mountains about 38 miles north of Salt Lake City. It has around 90,000 residents and a real personality. Historic 25th Street, the old Union Station and its museums, and a growing set of restaurants and shops make the downtown more interesting than you would guess.
The real draw is the mountains. Snowbasin, Powder Mountain and Nordic Valley are all close, Pineview Reservoir handles summer water, and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail is popular for biking and hiking. Housing is moderate by Utah standards, though prices rose sharply in recent years. Winter inversions can trap smoggy air in the valley in January and February, and Ogden Canyon roads can be tricky in heavy snow. Property crime is higher than the state average, mostly in a few central and west-side areas, so be careful late at night away from 25th Street.
