Overview

Summer in Cody means a rodeo every night, June to August, at the Cody Nite Rodeo. The town has about 10,400 people, is named for Buffalo Bill Cody, and leans into its Western past. The Buffalo Bill Center of the West is really five museums under one roof. Sheridan Avenue and the Irma Hotel keep the frontier look going.

It is also the east gateway to Yellowstone, about 52 miles from the park entrance, and the drive along the Shoshone River is scenic. Locals hunt, fish, float the river and ride horses. Life is quiet and friendly, and the town is low in crime. Compared with Jackson, Cody is far more affordable, with housing costs near or below the national average. The tradeoffs are remoteness (Billings is about 105 miles away), cold and windy winters, and mountain passes that close in snow. Bears and bison are part of daily life outside town.
