Much smaller than Boston across the Charles River, Cambridge still packs Harvard, MIT and one of the world's busiest biotech districts into a city of about 120,000 people. Everything feels close. You can leave Harvard Yard, wander through the Harvard Square bookstores and street performers, and end up in Kendall Square or Central Square for dinner without needing a car.
Visitors tend to do the museums (the Harvard Art Museums, Natural History and Peabody, plus the MIT Museum), walk or run the Charles River paths and visit Mount Auburn Cemetery. Day to day it is intellectual, international and busy, with Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese and Haitian Creole among the many languages you hear. Cost is the honest catch. It is among the most expensive places in the country, especially for rent and buying, and most housing is condos and multi-family. Safety is good, though bike theft and stolen phones are common.
