Fall colour is especially good around Sherbrooke, the largest city in Quebec's Eastern Townships, a French-speaking university town of about 175,000 people about 160 km east of Montreal. Rivers run through the middle, and the downtown is known for its large murals, which turn ordinary walls into public art. Lac des Nations is the local gathering spot, with a boardwalk and summer events, and Lennoxville, a short distance away, is the English-speaking corner around Bishop's University.
The countryside is the real reward. Magog and Lake Memphremagog are about 25 km away, Mont Orford has skiing and hiking, and the region is dotted with vineyards and cider makers. It is one of the more affordable cities in the country, with rents and houses below the national average, though the rental market has tightened. Crime is low. Winters are cold and snowy, so winter tires are a must, and daily life runs in French.

8.0
Very good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 60; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Sherbrooke's Crime Severity Index is below the national average (roughly 50-70, approximate, Statistics Canada and Service de police de Sherbrooke data); main visitor risks are thefts from vehicles and occasional night-time nuisance offences. Health care: Quebec RAMQ does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: CHUS (Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke, Hotel-Dieu and Fleurimont sites), Hopital Fleurimont; services are French-first with English often available. Hazards: cold snowy winters (-10 to -20 C with windchill), freezing rain and ice storms, spring flooding on the Magog and Saint-Francois rivers, summer thunderstorms. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Use ordinary caution late at night near parts of the downtown core along Rue Wellington Sud and Rue King Ouest after bars close, and in some lower-income sectors of the Vieux-Nord and Jacques-Cartier area with higher property crime; most visitor areas are generally safe. Winter roads are icy and driving to Mont-Orford and rural roads may require winter tires (mandatory in Quebec December 1 to March 15)
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
