Maple season suits Saint-Georges, the biggest city in the Beauce, a region of south-central Quebec famous for its entrepreneurs and its maple syrup. About 33,000 people live here along the Chaudiere River, and the local economy is built on manufacturing and small business, with low unemployment as the result. It is not a tourist town, but there is enough to fill a weekend. You can walk the river and the falls near Parc des Sept Chutes, wander the old centre by the church, ride the cycling routes, or visit a sugar shack in maple season. Quebec City is about 110 km north.
Living here is cheap by Canadian standards, though rentals are tight and prices have gone up since 2020. Crime is low, well below the national average. Winters are cold and snowy, the river can flood in spring, and this is a very French-speaking city where English is uncommon outside a few businesses.
