Look across the Ottawa River from Ottawa and you see Gatineau, a cheaper, quieter, French-speaking twin, a city of about 290,000 that many people use as a base for working in the capital. Hull is the downtown, and the Canadian Museum of History faces Parliament Hill from the Quebec side, with one of the best views of it anywhere. Aylmer, out west, is friendlier to English speakers.
The big draw is Gatineau Park, a huge tract of forest and lakes with hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing, plus brilliant fall colours in October. In summer the hot air balloon festival fills the sky, and Winterlude spills over from Ottawa in February. Living costs are lower than in Ottawa and a little below the national average. Winters are cold, the river has flooded badly in recent years, and a few blocks in central Hull get rowdy late at night. French is the working language, though English is common.

7.6
Very good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 68; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Gatineau's Crime Severity Index is below the national average (roughly 60-75, approximate, Statistics Canada; Service de police de la Ville de Gatineau data show property crime and vehicle theft as the main issues). Health care: Quebec RAMQ does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Hopital de Gatineau, Hopital de Hull, Hopital de Papineau (Buckingham), Hopital Pierre-Janet (mental health) plus Ottawa Hospital and CHEO across the river; French is the working language, with English generally available in Hull and Aylmer. Hazards: cold snowy winters (-10 to -25 C with windchill), summer heat waves and humidity, spring flooding along the Ottawa River (major floods in 2017 and 2019), freezing rain and rare tornadoes (a tornado hit the Gatineau area in 2018). Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Gatineau is generally quiet; use ordinary caution late at night in parts of central Hull around Rue Eddy and the Promenade du Portage after bar closing, near some downtown Hull parks and in parts of the Wright-Gatineau sector where street drug use and theft occur. Winter roads and river ice near Gatineau Park can be hazardous
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
