Rent and home prices in Alberta's capital run well under Toronto or Vancouver, yet Edmonton, a city of about one million on the North Saskatchewan River, calls itself the Festival City for good reason. The Fringe Theatre Festival in August is one of the biggest in North America, and the summer calendar is full. There is plenty to do. People visit West Edmonton Mall, the Royal Alberta Museum and Fort Edmonton Park, hike and bike the river valley, and spend evenings on Whyte Avenue in Old Strathcona. Oilers games are a big deal in winter, and Elk Island National Park is about 40 kilometres east.
This is one of the more affordable large Canadian cities. The price is the winter, which can drop below minus 30 with the wind chill. Crime is higher than the national average, with street disorder concentrated in a few downtown areas. Visitors need their own health insurance.

6.0
Good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 100; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Edmonton has a Crime Severity Index above the Canadian average (Statistics Canada, Edmonton CMA), higher than Calgary; main visitor risks are car break-ins and theft, downtown street disorder and some late-night incidents. Health care: Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: University of Alberta Hospital, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Misericordia, Grey Nuns, Stollery Children's. Hazards: extreme winter cold (-30C or colder with wind chill), icy roads, summer thunderstorms and hail, occasional tornadoes, wildfire smoke episodes in summer. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Use caution late at night in parts of Boyle Street, McCauley, Chinatown, and the area around 105A Avenue and 101 Street where street disorder, drug use and homelessness are concentrated, and around some LRT stations; most visitor areas including Whyte Avenue, Ice District and the River Valley are generally fine in the daytime
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
