Driving between Calgary and Edmonton, you reach Red Deer about halfway, roughly 150 km from each, and it calls itself the Parkland City for its river valley trails. About 100,000 people live here. It is the commercial hub of central Alberta, with Gaetz Avenue for shopping, a regional hospital and a steady calendar of rodeo and hockey.
Waskasoo Park has over 100 km of trails through the river valley, plus a nature centre, Bower Ponds and Heritage Ranch. Sylvan Lake beaches are about 25 km away, and Banff is roughly 240 km west. Westerner Days in July is the big event. It is one of the more affordable cities in Alberta, with modest rent and home prices. The honest downside is safety. The crime rate is well above the national average, mostly property crime and disorder in and around downtown. Winters are cold, highways ice up, and summer hailstorms can be fierce.

Population 100,844 (city, 2021 Census) from the Red Deer Wikipedia page (fetched) reflecting Statistics Canada; area 104.34 sq km, elevation 855 m and 1882/1894/1901/1913 dates also from that page. Metro 106,565 is the Red Deer CMA (new CMA status in 2021) from memory; that fetch showed the city figure only, so metro is lower confidence and should be checked against StatCan. 4.1
Fair · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 140; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Red Deer's Crime Severity Index has been well above the national average (roughly 120-160, approximate, Statistics Canada), driven by property crime, theft and disorder; main visitor risks are car break-ins, vehicle theft and theft from unattended vehicles. Health care: Alberta Health Care Insurance does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre (main acute care and trauma referral for central Alberta). Hazards: cold winters (-10 to -30 C possible), icy highways on Highway 2, summer hail and severe thunderstorms, wildfire smoke, Red Deer River spring flooding. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Use ordinary urban caution late at night in parts of downtown Red Deer around 49 Avenue and 51 Street, near shelters and along some Gaetz Avenue lots, where street disorder, drug use and theft are concentrated; some north and east side neighbourhoods have higher property crime rates but rarely draw visitors. Most visitor areas are generally fine day and night
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
