Roughly 170,000 people live in Oceanside, the most down-to-earth beach city in northern San Diego County. The pier is the center of the scene, along with the harbor and the California Surf Museum, and the surf culture is real: the Super Girl Surf Pro comes every late summer. History is close by too, at Mission San Luis Rey, founded in 1798.
Days here are simple. You walk the pier, eat something near the harbor, go to the Thursday sunset market, or head out along the San Luis Rey River Trail. Downtown and the pier area are the beachy part, South Oceanside is relaxed, and Rancho Del Oro and Ocean Hills are the family suburbs. Carlsbad is about 8 miles north and San Diego about 40 miles south. The cost is the main obstacle, since coastal Southern California housing is very expensive, for renters and buyers alike. Watch for rip currents near the pier, petty theft from cars and the beach, and some rougher stretches along Coast Highway. Santa Ana winds bring fire risk in the fall.
