Old Towne, a historic district built around a traffic-circle plaza with antique shops, cafes and restaurants, is what draws people to Orange, an Orange County city of about 138,000. It is one of the largest in California, and Chapman University adds a youthful crowd and the Hilbert Museum of California Art. The Plaza hosts a Saturday farmers market and the Orange International Street Fair over Labor Day weekend.
Day to day it feels like an older, more settled part of Southern California, with tree-lined streets, mid-century tracts and rural-feeling estates at Orange Park Acres. Hikers head to Santiago Oaks Regional Park, and Disneyland and Angel Stadium are just a few miles away. Housing is very expensive, with low inventory keeping prices high. Crime is fairly low, mainly vehicle break-ins, with a bit more caution advised near some older apartment corridors and the Santa Ana border. Earthquakes, summer smog and Santa Ana wind fire risk in the hills are the environmental downsides.
