Ontario, California, is best known for its airport, one of the busiest cargo hubs in the country, and for being a logistics center of the Inland Empire. About 187,000 people live here, about 40 miles east of Los Angeles. The city is more than warehouses: its historic downtown along Euclid Avenue has old trees, a museum and a small-town feel. Visitors often come for events at Toyota Arena, or to shop at Ontario Mills, and the Christmas on Euclid celebrations draw crowds. Route 66 runs through town, and Guasti Village and Old World Village have a few wineries and casual restaurants. Ontario Ranch, on the south side, is a huge new development with modern homes and parks.
Housing is expensive, though it costs less than coastal Southern California. Crime is moderate for the region, with vehicle theft and break-ins the main issue, especially in older areas near Holt and Mission Boulevards. The bigger everyday concern is air quality: this area has some of the worst ozone and particulate levels in the country, and summers are hot, often above 100 degrees.
