Aerospace made Lancaster what it is, thanks to nearby Edwards Air Force Base and Plant 42. It is the biggest town in the Antelope Valley, out in the high desert about 65 miles north of Los Angeles, with about 170,000 people, and it first grew up around a railroad station. The wide, flat horizon and big sky are part of its identity.
The best reason to visit is spring, when the California Poppy Reserve turns orange, weather permitting. Downtown, the BLVD has been rebuilt as an arts and dining corridor, with the art museum, the performing arts center, a cruise night and a farmers market. Vasquez Rocks and Devil's Punchbowl are close for a day trip, and the Antelope Valley Fair fills late summer. The big attraction for movers is price: housing costs far less than anywhere in Los Angeles County, though that comes with a long commute. Violent crime is above the state average, with vehicle theft common. Summers hit 100F or more, spring winds blow dust, and the San Andreas Fault runs just south.
