Hike the Otay Valley trails and you are in Chula Vista, the big suburb just south of San Diego, about 10 miles from downtown and the Mexican border. About 275,000 people live here, and Spanish is widely spoken. The mood is family-friendly and low key. Third Avenue Village has a farmers market and the August Lemon Festival, Sesame Place San Diego draws young kids, and the Living Coast Discovery Center and Bayfront Park sit on the water. The Olympic training center gives you more to do.
It is expensive, like the rest of coastal San Diego County, with housing well above the national level. Violent crime is near the US average, and car break-ins and theft are common. Two local issues are worth knowing: sewage pollution from the Tijuana River sometimes affects nearby beaches and air quality, and wildfires and Santa Ana winds arrive in fall.
