Divided by a deep river valley, Lethbridge is a city of about 100,000 people on the dry prairie of southern Alberta, and daily life happens on both sides. The High Level Bridge is the landmark everyone knows, and the coulees around it give the place its shape. It also has a reputation as the windiest big city in Canada, so plan on gusts in any season.
Day to day it feels like a manageable university and farming town. Visitors walk the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, poke around Fort Whoop-Up, and follow the trails through Indian Battle Park. Waterton Lakes National Park makes a long day trip, and the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is about 70 km west. Living costs run a little below the Canadian average, and homes are far cheaper than in Calgary. The tradeoffs are cold winters and crime above the national average, mostly property theft, so lock the car and keep bags out of sight.

5.3
Fair · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 115; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Lethbridge's Crime Severity Index has been above the national average (roughly 100-130, approximate, Statistics Canada), mostly property crime, theft, and drug and disorder issues; main visitor risks are car break-ins and vehicle theft, so do not leave valuables visible. Health care: Alberta Health Care Insurance does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Chinook Regional Hospital (main acute care), Lethbridge community health centre. Hazards: strong chinook winds year round (the windiest large city in Canada by reputation), cold winters (-10 to -25 C possible), summer hail, severe thunderstorms and heat, wildfire smoke from BC and the foothills, occasional river flooding in coulees. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Use ordinary urban caution late at night in parts of the downtown core and along 3rd Avenue South and 13th Street North, where some street disorder, public intoxication and drug use are visible; some north-side and east-side neighbourhoods have higher property crime rates but rarely draw visitors. Most visitor areas are generally fine day and night
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
