Between Okanagan Lake and Skaha Lake in southern British Columbia, Penticton is defined by its two beaches. About 37,000 people live here, and the name is often translated as a place to stay forever. Retirees and remote workers have taken that literally. Summer means beaches, paddleboards, and floating down the river channel, and Ironman Canada and the Peach Festival fill August.
Wine is the other draw, with the Naramata Bench and Skaha Bench wineries and craft breweries close to town. The Kettle Valley Rail Trail is good for cycling, Skaha Bluffs is a climbing spot, and Apex Mountain offers skiing in winter. The cost of living is above the national average, and housing is not cheap, though it is easier than Vancouver. Crime is above average, mostly property theft and car break-ins, with visible street disorder around Main Street. Summers bring heat and wildfire smoke, and Kelowna is about 60 km north.

Fair · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 115; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Penticton's Crime Severity Index is above the national average (roughly 100-130, approximate, Statistics Canada and Penticton RCMP data); the main issues are property crime, theft from vehicles and drug-related offences rather than violent crime against visitors. Health care: BC MSP does not cover visitors from outside BC, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Penticton Regional Hospital (Interior Health); Kelowna General Hospital for major trauma about 60 km north. Hazards: wildfire and heavy smoke in summer (2003 Okanagan Mountain Park fire and later wildfire seasons), extreme summer heat, drought, flash floods and debris flows, occasional winter ice and snow. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Use extra caution late at night on parts of Main Street and Martin Street and the south Government Street area, near shelters and encampments, where street disorder and drug use are visible; Lakeshore Drive gets crowded with heavy alcohol use on summer weekends and during long weekends, and parking lot break-ins occur at beaches and trailheads. Most visitor areas are generally fine
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
