Roughly 114,000 people live in Everett, a working waterfront city on Puget Sound, about 28 miles north of Seattle. It is the home of Boeing's giant widebody plant, and the Future of Flight and its factory tour draw plane fans from all over. Naval Station Everett and the marina add to the maritime character. The city has been slowly polishing itself. Downtown and Colby Avenue have a growing food and drink scene, Marina Village is newer waterfront living, and the Silvertips hockey team fills the arena through the winter. On clear days the Cascades are visible, and Whidbey Island is a short ferry ride from nearby Mukilteo.
Costs are high, driven by housing, though Everett costs less than Seattle and Bellevue and homes sell quickly. Washington has no state income tax. Property crime and street disorder are the main concerns, especially along Evergreen Way and near the transit area downtown, so lock your car. Rainy gray winters, windstorms, river flooding, smoke in late summer and earthquake risk round out the picture.
