Overview

Once known as the Berry Capital of Oregon, Gresham is now the state's fourth largest city, with about 111,000 people, sitting just east of Portland at the doorstep of Mount Hood and the Columbia River Gorge. It has a suburban, practical feel, with a small historic downtown, hillside neighborhoods and newer developments like Pleasant Valley. The biggest draw is access. The Springwater Corridor Trail runs through town, Powell Butte Nature Park has open meadows and views, and the Gorge waterfalls are about 20 miles away, with Mount Hood a little farther for hiking and skiing. The Saturday farmers market runs from May to October, and summer brings concerts in the park. Portland is about 13 miles west.

Costs are fairly high, though less than closer-in Portland, and the market has flattened. Rockwood and some stretches along East Burnside see more property crime, and car break-ins and catalytic converter theft are common, so keep valuables out of sight. Winters are gray and wet with the occasional ice storm, late summer can bring wildfire smoke and heat waves, and earthquake risk from the Cascadia fault is worth knowing.

Metro figure 2,510,000 is the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro MSA (shared; this city is not the anchor). Population is Census Vintage 2025 (July 1, 2025) via QuickFacts (111,513); land area 23.47 sq mi from Census; median value and rent from Census ACS 2020-2024. Portland regional site is used as visitor site since Gresham has no dedicated tourism bureau confirmed; calendar is the City of Gresham events page. Elevation, coordinates, founding, event months, hotel ranges, tipping, cost-of-living index, airport distances, 1BR rent and crime context are approximate or from general knowledge and not verified in this pass. Web fetch of non-Census pages was limited, so confidence is moderate. Official URLs found via search but not load-tested.

Hazards: Cascadia subduction zone earthquake risk, winter ice storms, wildfire smoke episodes in late summer and fall, heat waves, and Columbia Gorge fire and landslide closures

                Local notes

Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.

Parts of Rockwood and along East Burnside and SE Stark near 181st have higher property and street crime, especially late at night; use ordinary big-city caution around transit stops and motels there. Downtown Gresham and hillside neighborhoods are generally comfortable for visitors
