About 107,000 people live in Lee's Summit, a growing suburb southeast of Kansas City, about 20 miles from downtown. It began as a railroad stop, and the historic downtown still sits along the tracks with restaurants, shops and a Saturday farmers market in season. Around it are newer neighborhoods like Hawthorne and Chapel Ridge, and plenty of new construction.
Families choose it for safety and schools, and it feels easygoing and car-oriented. Lake Jacomo and Blue Springs Lake are close, along with Longview Lake and its trail, and Missouri Town 1855 in Fleming Park. Summer brings concerts in the park and fireworks, and fall has the Music and Arts Festival. Costs are moderate, close to the national average, though homes are priced above the Kansas City metro median. Crime is low, mostly car break-ins. The weather tradeoff is spring storms with hail and tornado risk, plus humid summers and the occasional ice storm.
