Roughly 20 miles south of Oklahoma City, Norman is home to the University of Oklahoma, and the school sets the rhythm of the whole city. With about 131,000 people, it fills up on Sooners football Saturdays and quiets down over the summer.
It is a pleasant, moderately priced place to live, with steady housing demand from the university and rents near the middle. Visitors can browse the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art or the Sam Noble natural history museum, walk Andrews Park, or head to Lake Thunderbird. Crime is below the state urban average, with theft from cars and bikes and some rowdiness near campus on game nights the main issues. The trade is the sky. Norman gets serious tornado weather from April to June, and it is home to the National Weather Center. The area was hit by major tornadoes in 1999 and 2013, so know where the nearest shelter is.
